Noson Agored Ysgol Friars Open Evening - 21/10/2025

Vision for teaching and learning

At Ysgol Friars we aspire for all our pupils to foster enjoyment of learning to the highest standards through the creation of a bilingual, civilized community where pupils share a common set of values applicable to their local, national and global identity.

Teaching and learning is at the heart of our school. Our teachers challenge pupils and have high expectations of them. We recognise the integral role of the learning environment in supporting effective learning. Our teachers consider the pedagogical approaches they will need to develop to support pupils to make progress and to achieve their potential.

Teachers are encouraged to reflect on their practice, collaborate with colleagues within the school and in other schools. All of our teachers receive any appropriate training required to improve their practice. We are also asking pupil voice how we can improve their learning experiences.

Curriculum

Ysgol Friars follows the framework provided by Curriculum for Wales. At Ysgol Friars our curriculum is everything a pupil experiences in pursuit of the four purposes. Our aim is to support each of our pupils to become:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

At Ysgol Friars we are proud of our broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. We want the best for our pupils, which is why we have invested heavily in developing and establishing an innovative and engaging curriculum that meets their needs and aspirations.

Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils study a curriculum that includes English; Cymraeg; Mathematics; Science; Religion, Values and Ethics; Geography; History; ICT; International Languages; Technology; Art; Music; Drama; Physical Education and PSE.

In Years 10 and 11, pupils follow a large range of academic and vocational courses to suit every pupil’s needs and aspirations. All pupils study English Language and English Literature; Welsh as a first or second language; Mathematics: Numeracy and Mathematics; Science; Religion, Values and Ethics; Welsh Baccalaureate and a number of optional courses.

Our curriculum at Ysgol Friars enables our pupils to develop their literacy, numeracy and digital competence skills and, where there are opportunities, to extend and apply them across all subjects.

To enhance our curriculum many varied activities and clubs are organised outside lesson times during lunch time and after school. Every pupil has the opportunity to participate in these.

Options year 10 and 12

Decisions as to which courses to follow for Year 10 and 12 are made by individual pupils after much help and guidance from subject and pastoral staff, a process which starts at the beginning of the spring term. Pupils at Ysgol Friars are well supported in choosing their individual curriculum pathway and parents are involved throughout this process.

We also have a very successful partnership with Arfon secondary schools and Coleg Menai Llandrillo to allow pupils the opportunity to study their preferred subject.
